Maternity Capsule Wardrobe

January 27, 2017

capsulewardropecomp

During Ainsley’s pregnancy I sincerely wish someone had sat me down and told me this piece of advice: When it comes to shopping for maternity clothes, buy high quality, classic pieces that you love and that make you feel great. Invest in a capsule wardrobe now and you won’t regret it.

You see, I got trapped into the idea that pregnancy is only nine months. Why spend money on clothes you will only wear for a short period of time, right? Wrong. If you hate what you wear during those nine months, if your clothes aren’t cut well and don’t make you feel and look good, it will feel like nine years. Truth.

If you plan to have more than one kiddo, I promise you won’t regret it. I didn’t do this and I sincerely wish I would have. I’m convinced that while some of the items listed below are pretty expensive, I would have actually spent less in the long term by really curating a capsule wardrobe for pregnancy. Since we hope to have one or two more kiddos down the line, I’m thinking of doing this for the remainder of this pregnancy in hopes that I’ll get plenty of use out of my clothes down the road.

When selecting the items listed below I picked quite a few pieces that were designed to be worn during and after pregnancy, hence the large number of Hatch pieces that I’ve suggested. I have a few friends who own clothing from them and they have said that their Hatch items have gotten wear long after baby has arrived, which I love!

I also avoided most tops with any obvious rouching on the sides, as that just screams “maternity!” and you will never wear those items after you have baby, even if you do have a bump after delivery.

Oh, and on the subject of seasonality, I tried to keep that in mind as well. By selecting slightly lighter weight dresses and tops you should be able to get wear out of them in any season. Pair your tops with an open cardigan or utility jacket in the winter and wear them alone in the warmer months. Chances are if you’re pregnant during the winter you will run a little warmer, anyway. The same holds true for dresses! You will, of course, need to invest in some seasonal items – a maternity winter coat, perhaps, or an extra maxi dress or swimsuit, but I tried to just cover the basics here.

Diaper Bag Dilemma – Solved!

I’ve always had a thing for pretty purses and handbags. For as long as I can remember, it’s been my go-to indulgence accessory. That is, until I became a mom. I dutifully committed to carrying a very traditional diaper bag when Ainsley was born, because most of the pretty, fashionable diaper bags I looked at just didn’t seem very functional. And while I might love fashion, I wasn’t willing to sacrifice function with a little one in tow.

While I was at Influence Conference I had the opportunity to meet with the amazing founders of Lily Jade, the makers of designer diaper bags that combine function and form. I had heard of Lily Jade before Influence, but was a little skeptical. Was the bag worth it’s hefty price tag? But when I saw the bags in person I was 100% convinced.

The leather is soft and supple, and the structure of the bag is beatufiully designed and constructed. But the best part? The interior pouch! Each Lily Jade bag comes with a removable baby bag organizer so you can fill it with all sorts of baby gear, bottles and the like without making a total mess of your bag. And when you move on from the baby stage the organizer can be removed, transitioning your bag from diaper bag to purse or overnight bag.

We’re getting ready to travel quite a bit this holiday season, and I’m excited to travel both fashionably and sensibly with this bag. And with all the organization, I’m thinking I might even have room for some non-baby essentials like magazines, laptop and snacks for mom and dad.

*Lily Jade provided this bag for me to review. Thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

Curating a practical mom-drobe has changed the way I shop. Because I’m toting a messy, drooly baby around town half of the day, my clothes rarely make it through the day without a few spots and stains, meaning dry clean only items are a thing of the past. Some might say off-white isn’t practical with kiddos, but I love wearing white. As long as I can wash it at the end of the day, I’m good!

This sweater is incredibly comfortable, cozy and flattering. I paired it with my favorite skinny jeans, flats and some beautiful baubles from Stella & Dot. This is the second outfit that Kim styled for me, and I’m loving the edgy + lady like look these three pieces create. The pearl studs are actually reversible, so it’s like owning two pairs of earrings in one, which is perfect for a jewelry minimalist like myself.

Kim has been so kind to host a giveaway for Espresso and Cream readers! She will be giving away a $25 gift card to her Stella & Dot shop to one lucky reader. Thanks, Kim, for hosting the giveaway and keeping my mom-drobe looking fresh and stylist. Even if you don’t win, I would highly suggest hopping over to Kim’s page and doing a little holiday shopping – I know I already did!

:: My New Mom Style ::

StellaDot_4Today I’m launching the first in a series of posts on my new mom style. I’ve been slowly revising my wardrobe over the past few months to fit my new life as a mom, work-from-home freelancer and recipe developer and manager of a home remodel that’s still very much in progress.

Although I don’t have to report to an office every day, I do like to try and dress up a bit for the days that I’m working. Sometimes I’ll head to a coffee shop, sometimes I stay close to home, other times I’ll camp out at my mom’s house when she’s at work. There’s something about putting on a real outfit, makeup and doing your hair that helps to boost productivity.

One area of my mom-drobe that was seriously lacking? Jewelry. I’ve been putting more thought into my wardrobe without really focusing on accessorizing. Thankfully Kim came to my rescue and offered to style a couple outfits with beautiful jewelry from Stella & Dot.

Have you all heard of Stella & Dot? Their jewelry is beautiful, you guys! Heavy, high quality and durable. And I found the price point great – just nice enough to feel like you’re giving or receiving something speical without breaking the bank.

The earrings I’m wearing are reversible, with pearls on one side and gold studs on the other. And the necklace can be worn two ways as well, which, for a mom on a budget is a huge plus to be able to get two looks from one piece of jewelry. I’ll be doing a giveaway with Kim in the coming weeks, but I would highly suggest you check out the line for yourself in the meantime!

What I’m Loving: Fall Edition

October 1, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 9.20.22 AM

1. One Love Organics: Vitamin B Cleansing Oil + Makeup Remover
This has been my go-to face wash for a while, but I especially love it in the winter when my skin is prone to dryness. It doesn’t

2. Dead Sea Mud Mask by Pure Body Naturals
This mud mask is gentle on my skin but leaves it feeling smooth, refreshed and clear. I use it about once a week.

3. The Lounge Bralette by Victoria’s Secret
Seriously the most comfortable bra on the face of the planet. I find myself wearing it all the time because it has just the right amount of support but is pretty and comfortable. Win-win!

4. 21 Day Fix At-Home Workouts
I’m not following the eating plan, but lately 30 minutes at home is about all the time I have to workout. My sister-in-law turned me onto these workouts (She’s a Beachbody coach) and I’ve been so impressed. They’re easy, effective and don’t take a ton of time.

5. Booties from 14th and Union – Nordstrom Rack
I have them in the lighter color and am planning on buying them in the black as well. They’re SO super comfortable, and for tall girls like myself, the lack of heel is really nice. I forsee myself wearing them all fall and well into the winter.

6. Trader Joe’s Coconut Body Butter
Seriously the most wonderful, luxurious body butter. It smells SO good, goes on without leaving a greasy residue and makes your skin feel amazing.

7. Frye Paige Tall Riding Boots
Totally a splurge item, but they were a Christmas gift from last year and I couldn’t love them any more. I think I wear my brown boots 5 days out of the week during the colder months, so investing in a great pair just made sense.
